Who is Seth Godin?

Many call Seth Godin a mastermind when it comes to marketing. His blogs and ebooks are incredibly popular, and he is the author of ten international bestselling books. The Dip and Meatball Sundae are two of his latest titles.

Another of his books, entitled Permission Marketing, was an Amazon.com top 100 bestseller for a year, a Fortune Best Business Book and it spent four months on the Business Week bestseller list. The book also spent time on the New York Timesbusiness book bestseller list.

The theory behind Godin’s book is threefold. First, he claims that television advertising has lost its hold on the American public. Thus, marketers can no longer command the attention of consumers as quickly and easily as they used to in the United States.

The next tenant of his philosophy states that, since consumers now have more options and power in the modern marketplace, they must be shown more respect. Junk mail, spam and downright lies just won’t fly in the modern American market.

The third part of his vision asserts that the only way to make an idea catch on is for that idea to be truly remarkable. He created the phrase “purple cow” for any remarkable product that truly stands out in the marketplace. Consequently, the Sunnyvale campus of Yahoo! erected a purple cow in its lobby to show support for Godin’s theory. It also symbolizes their belief in the remarkable qualities of their company.

His latest book, Purple Cow, discusses the ways in which companies can transform themselves and become remarkable in their field. It was both a New York Times and Wall Street Journalbestseller.

It was featured in USA TodayThe New York TimesThe Industry Standard and Wired OnlineUnleashing the Ideavirus was fourth on the Amazon Japan bestseller list, and it reached number five in America.
